SAP FICO consultant screening questions for recruiters

SAP FICO consultant screening questions for recruiters: implementations, S/4HANA, integration and month-end close, with strong and weak answers.

LinkedInX

A first screen for an SAP FICO consultant should confirm what the candidate configured with their own hands, and on which SAP version. Twenty minutes is enough if you take one project at a time and ask what they did rather than what the team did.

What does an SAP FICO consultant do?

SAP is the business software many large companies use to run finance, purchasing, sales and manufacturing. FICO is two parts of it: Financial Accounting (FI), which records the company's books, and Controlling (CO), which tracks internal costs and profitability. A FICO consultant gathers requirements from the finance team, configures SAP to match them, tests the setup, supports month-end close and often works on moves to SAP S/4HANA, SAP's current ERP system. SAP has said it will provide mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7 core applications until the end of 2027, followed by optional extended maintenance until the end of 2030. Ask the hiring manager whether the role is a migration, a new implementation or support of a running system, because each needs different experience.

Which skills should you check at each level?

Level What they should be able to talk about
Junior or support (0 to 3 years) Posting and reversing documents, general ledger accounts, vendor and customer invoices, the payment run, month-end tasks, fixing support tickets, basic configuration
Mid-level (3 to 7 years) At least one full-cycle implementation, company code setup, payables, receivables and asset accounting configuration, cost centers and internal orders, integration with purchasing and sales, testing and cutover
Senior (7+ years) Design across FI and CO, S/4HANA migrations, product costing and profitability analysis, running workshops with finance leaders, data migration strategy, leading other consultants

What screening questions should you ask an SAP FICO consultant?

Take one project at a time and ask what the candidate configured personally.

How many full-cycle implementations have you done, and what was your role in each?

Clients often ask for full-cycle experience, and it is an easy claim to stretch.

Strong answer: describes each project by industry, SAP version (ECC or S/4HANA), the phases they were present for, the areas they configured and when it went live.

Weak answer: counts support projects as implementations, or can't say what they configured.

Walk me through how a vendor invoice goes from posting to payment.

It tests whether they know the process end to end.

Strong answer: the invoice is posted (often matched against the purchase order and goods receipt), sits as an open item, gets picked up by the automatic payment program (transaction F110) based on due date and payment method, a bank file goes out and the item is cleared.

Weak answer: "The system pays it," with no steps.

What changed for finance when your company moved to S/4HANA?

Strong answer: mentions the Universal Journal (FI and CO line items in one table), customers and vendors becoming business partners, the new asset accounting and cost elements becoming general ledger accounts. They explain what that changed for users or reports.

Weak answer: "It was faster," and nothing else.

How does a goods receipt in purchasing create an accounting entry?

Integration questions separate people who configure SAP from people who use it.

Strong answer: talks about movement types, valuation classes and automatic account determination (transaction OBYC), and the GR/IR clearing account.

Weak answer: doesn't know which settings decide the accounts.

Tell me about a month-end close problem you fixed.

Strong answer: a specific problem, such as an unbalanced intercompany posting, an uncleared GR/IR account or a failed allocation cycle, what they found and what they changed so it didn't come back.

Weak answer: a general description of month-end with no problem in it.

How would you set up cost centers and internal orders for a new department?

This checks the Controlling half, which some FICO candidates are thin on.

Strong answer: places the cost centers in the standard hierarchy of the right controlling area, explains when to use an internal order instead of a cost center, and sets up how the order's costs get settled.

Weak answer: uses cost center and profit center as if they meant the same thing.

How did you handle data migration for balances and open items at go-live?

A senior question.

Strong answer: describes the migration tool they used (for example the SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit), the cutover plan, reconciliation against the old system and sign-off from finance.

Weak answer: "The data team handled that."

What red flags should you note?

  • Calls every project "full cycle," including support work.
  • Explains the accounting well but can't describe any configuration. That may be a finance user rather than a consultant.
  • Can't say whether their last system was ECC or S/4HANA.
  • Lists FI and CO equally but every example is from one side.
  • Claims a certification without details. SAP lists financial accounting and management accounting certifications for S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition; ask which one and when.

How do you run this screen with Simplehire?

Enter the client's required skills when you create the role, for example SAP FI, SAP CO, S/4HANA, accounts payable and receivable, asset accounting and month-end close. The candidate talks with our AI interviewer in the browser through the interview link, and you review the screening report before submitting anyone.

Tier Price and length SAP roles it fits
Basic $2 per screen, about 15 minutes Junior or support roles and first screens
Adaptive $3 per screen, about 20 minutes Most consultant roles. Follow-up questions and a per-answer AI assessment test implementation claims
Advanced $5 per screen, about 30 minutes Senior, lead and solution architect roles, with deeper follow-ups on strong answers

The report shows a verdict, Skills demonstrated X/Y and Areas to probe. If the areas to probe sit mostly on one side of FI and CO, raise it in your call, since one-sided experience is a red flag above. You make the decision. The standard proctoring applies (full-screen enforced, copy and paste restricted or flagged, tab switches recorded), and for remote roles you can require an ID check with a live face match before the interview starts.

Frequently asked questions

What does FICO stand for in SAP?

FI is Financial Accounting, the part of SAP that records the company's books: general ledger, payables, receivables, fixed assets and bank. CO is Controlling, which tracks internal costs and profitability through cost centers, profit centers, internal orders and product costing. A FICO consultant configures both.

What counts as a full-cycle SAP implementation?

One project the candidate worked on from requirements and design through configuration, testing, data migration, go-live and early support. Ask which phases they were present for and what they configured. Support work on a system that was already live doesn't count as full cycle.

Which SAP certifications cover FICO?

SAP's learning site lists separate certifications for financial accounting and management accounting on SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition. Ask which one the candidate holds and when they earned it, then ask about the project where they used it.

Which Simplehire tier fits an SAP FICO screen?

Most SAP FICO consultants are worth an Adaptive screen ($3 per screen, about 20 minutes), because its follow-up questions test whether full-cycle implementation claims hold up. Senior, lead and solution architect roles fit Advanced ($5, about 30 minutes). Junior and support roles can start with Basic ($2, about 15 minutes).
